I'm your host, Jerry D with another episode of Totally Rad Christmas, the podcast that talks all things Christmas in the 80s, toys, movies, specials, music, and fads. If it was gnarly during Christmas in the 80s, we got it covered. Now, joining me is a Totally Rad Christmas All-Star and Multiple Ratty winner. It's one of the Hallmark Dream Guys. The Saturday morning mafia there. So that's been like two years. I that was two years ago. Yeah, it's it's insane. I I didn't realize how long ago it was, but uh it's good to see you, man. It's really good to see you. We're here to talk about this is a bonus episode, it's live. I'm not doing any cuts or edits or anything. I'm just gonna add some music and we're good to go. We're here to talk about the uh dream book that just released digitally and I think also in stores um recently as well. But I I haven't gone to the store. I just I saw it, CJ Belanger sent it to me, and so I was like, cool, let me let me go dig through this. Now, before we dive into it, just like Carol Kane did to Bill Murray and Scrooge, I want you to hit me with the toaster. So I'm gonna ask you some questions and I want you to hit me with the first answer you can think of, okay? You don't have to think too hard about it. Let's say you're in charge of designing a line of ornaments about home alone, okay? Which would you design first?

Oh, for sure, yeah. It's gotta be that one, right? Yeah, I would love to see Marvin Harry like some sort of mechanical like get hit with the the paint cans, you know, like you wind it up and they get hit with the cans or something. I think that'd be pretty fun too. But that yeah, you're right.

If I was if I was to design the whole home alone line for Hallmark, it would end up being this like Rube Goldberg machine of things that you put on your Christmas tree.

I'd totally buy that though. That's amazing. Okay, what other Christmas movie should they make Hallmark ornaments for?

SPEAKER_01 3:25

Die Hard.

SPEAKER_00 3:28

But if you gotta do die, if you do die hard, you gotta do lethal weapon also. Alright, I'm in, I'm in. And finally, let's say you can design your own Hallmark ornament, anything from any time to the sky's a limit. What would it be?

SPEAKER_01 3:44

Well, my first thought kind of gets answered in this book here because uh there's a particular movie that uh I'm very, very fond of that I want more Christmas ornaments for. And more Christmas village pieces for. And Hallmark has a uh this year has a wonderful life ornament.

SPEAKER_00 4:04

Yeah, I saw that. I was very excited as well. You're right. There's like I don't know why there's not more ornament. I mean, I would think the bell, right? They should have at least a bell, because whenever a bell rings, an angel gets it.

I mean they do they do a color express bell every year.

And that's about it, yeah. So like it's right there, guys. It's it's royalty free. Come on.

Yeah, it's not their first it's not their first wonderful life ornament they had um Mary and Oh man. I'm a big fan, but I just forgot it.

Yeah. They have uh they had them tick you know together towards the end where they're you know, he's got his arm around her and stuff. I do have that one, but that as far as I know, that's the only one they had before this year.

Yeah, yeah, they should have a whole lot of them. Well, the dream book is really big and really long, so I say let's dive in and we'll talk a little bit about it. And then if there's a page that we don't have a lot to say about, we'll just go ahead and rush through that as well. Oh, yeah, yeah. Uh so it starts off the cover Dream Book 2026. It's got one of the Santas on it, all completely white, white beard, white suit, everything. And it's like a bell, I believe.

Yeah, a bell, Christmas tree-shaped bell kind of looking thing.

And there's a lot of red, it almost looks like uh AI designed these this picture, you know, the way that the trees are. Yes. And some of it it it they're red trees, but for some reason it just it reminds me of like AI.

Yeah, it's it's there's no there's supposed to be depth in there, but the the the trees they just look like pixel blobs. Nice, that's right, but it doesn't look like there were like any like real trees there or or anything.

Yeah, I I don't know. I mean I think it's got this like snow overlay.

I swear that's from Canva. It probably is, no, and they just turned down the opacity because I've done that a thousand times on my thumbnails on YouTube.

I I bet that's what they did. They're like, ooh, let's let's do that. And then we'll just pretend we uh we did it in Photoshop and Illustrator and charge them a lot of money for it.

Yeah, well, in this economy, you gotta do what you gotta do.

That's right, that's right. So you open it up, we get to the chapters, and it's divided into sections art and artistry, Christmas wonder, meaningful moments, hobbies and interests, uh small wonders, kids at heart, fan favorites, and tricks and treats, which is always the Halloween section that they've started doing, which I I think is a great idea. And they have a few ornaments displayed here that we'll see later on. Um I gotta say though that uh that R2D2 with the uh Santa hat is kind of cool.

Yeah, I like that one. And the one that I really like is the um the Charlie Brown Christmas tree, uh kite-eating Christmas tree.

Yep, I like I love that one.

Yeah, so it's it's an actual Christmas tree with the kite stuck in it, or like on top of it, and then just Charlie Brown's looking up distraught, and Snoopy's just staring like, well, what'd you expect?

Absolutely.

And the Santa's pretty cute too.

Yeah, I like that Santa.

Yeah, I do too. The sack, the sack is um, I wish it was a little more brown, but the green works well also.

Well, that's uh that's uh second one in a series. I think the first one.

I think so, yeah. Yeah, I think you're right.

Last one, last year the Santa was bent over way more. I think I made a joke that he was osteoporosis Santa.

What hump? Yeah.

And uh and I ended up getting it and loved it. It was so much better in person.

SPEAKER_00 7:45

So you know, that always happens. There's always something you're looking at, like, ah, this looks terrible. And then you get there and you're like, that's actually kind of cool, and better than I thought.

Yeah, it happens.

So let's look at chapter one, art and artistry. As you turn the page, we get Father Christmas and uh Father Christmas's reindeer, and so it's like um almost like a Russian kind of Santa, even though I guess Father Christmas is technically like British. I think it's supposed to be like Diet Morosh. And um, it's got the fur trim, it's all blue, there's snowflakes.

I love I love I love it. I don't know if I'll get it, but I do love it.

Same, same. I think if they had just done it in red, yeah, like like made it more like a traditional Santa, I would have s scooped it up.

Um yeah, I think that's really all I'd say on that page.

No, no, no. We got the young Santa.

The young Santa. I started collecting them when they first came out. And that's one I'm getting. I've loved that series. That's been great.

It is cute. He's got like a green scarf on. Yep. And um there's a little cardinal, like a baby cardinal down below him, and uh, and then we get like a gnomes lord of gnomeshire.

Yeah, for the I don't know what the deal people love gnomes, and I've never like I just I don't know what like where the draw is, but cool. If you like it, that's great.

Yeah, uh yeah, I'm the I'm the same way. I know that I think Weird Christmas years ago did a episode on that that particular mushroom on the staff and what it had to do with like Christmas in Northern Europe. So I I half understand it, but it's not got to, I got to you know.

I mean, I used to uh have a really good memory, and it's over the years, especially the last couple of years, I found it hasn't been quite as good as it used to be, so I don't even remember that, but I used to listen to Weird Christmas all the time, so I'll I'm gonna have to go hunt for it.

But yeah, well, we're at the age where we have to forget stuff to learn new stuff, Gary.

That's true, it's so true. Uh so on the next page we get a bunch of snowmen, and my wife loves snowmen, so uh I think the one she really liked was the um was D there, which is the welcoming wreath. It's like uh it's almost like a mommy snowman and a kid snowman, and there's a a wreath around their heads and uh a little snow dog or something.

Right, right. That one's really good. That is the that is the best on there.

Yeah, I really like that one.

That is the best. I my um my daughter, my youngest daughter liked the uh beach one just because of that little turtle.

No, the turtle is cute for sure. Yeah. It has it almost has a little bit of um uh a Pixar kind of vibe to it.

It does. It does kind of have a Pixar kind of look to it.

There's a snowman driving a truck with like flames on it. I mean, cool. Yeah. Holiday Parade is what that one's called. I I will say when I first glanced at it, I did think B was like a mailman snowman, but it doesn't make any sense.

With a cat, yeah, like a cow in a milk. You know, but but the hat. I saw the hat and I was like, oh, okay, that's that's cool, but nope. Um but as you go on to that next page there, which is now page five, there's like uh, I don't know, almost like a smorgasbord of different things.

I mean, there's some cute ones on here, like some really nice ones. Uh the I like the one with the gingerbread, but his hat's kind of weird.

Yeah, yeah, they like Lollapalooza looking kind of hat.

Yeah, it's like like Dr. Seuss kind of hat. Yeah, but my son loves gingerbread, man, and so like I I might end up getting that one too. Yeah. Um, and then there's little elf with the chocolate chip cookie that I like also because uh chocolate chip cookies are dope.

Yeah, that uh that little house with the little um letter M there, Tony's Toys, has a little pillage collection that they started, and it's oh okay, it's really nice. Um the houses and stuff are real detailed, and uh and they're very cool. They're very cool. And uh and you can hang them or you can set them on a shelf.

And it's got a cute little elf there with it.

So yeah, yeah, it comes with both pieces there.

That's cool. That's cool. Yeah, I mean on this one I'd probably get the two cookies and yeah, maybe the reindeer also.

Well, especially, yeah, if you started already. So this one is Dancer. So I assume it was Prancer was the extra. Prancer was last year, yeah. Okay.

Yeah, I don't remember. Last year, I I was saying it earlier before we started. I was kind of disappointed with its selection last year. Yeah, I don't think we bought any, uh, which is rare for us. We usually buy you know several, but last year I I think we just looked at it like uh there's nothing really drawing us. But this year there's some really great ones I'm very happy with.

Yeah, last year we just kind of stuck to the ones we collect normally. I think I think that little Lose Reindeer was it was the um only one we got before it went to like 50% off.

Oh, that one's cool. Yeah. Is that like a mouse or a hamster? It's a hamster. A hamster, yeah. And it's got like a wreath made out of green buttons with like red thread connecting them to the super cute.

Oh man. Yeah. Uh and then we get some Christmas birds on the other side. Cozy critters. It's uh like a really big red cardinal, and I I mean, I'm not even sure what kind of bird that is underneath.

But here's the thing. One time I got a cozy critter.

Yeah.

And then I got all the cozy critters.

So never say never, right?

And I'm not even like a big bird. Not a big bird. I'm not even like a fan of birds. You know, but for some reason, right? These cozy critters, they just make me happy to look at because they're so they are, yeah.

He's a nice little just just yeah, it's uh big boned kind of bird. Yeah.

We'll be getting it, and we'll be getting the one below it, and I hate it when they do the the oh, the two colors. The two colors because the one's more rare than the other. So uh I'll have to pull some strings at my local Hallmark store.

There's like yeah, one's green, one's red. And I I don't know, is that a quail? I don't know what kind of bird that is.

Uh that'd have to look.

Yeah. And then there's some like really old-timey style, like like a hobby horse and um like little dollhouse type uh ornaments that I can see people liking them, but they were never quite my style.

No, no, they're they're fine. Yeah, I mean it's like that uh lighthouse, it's like 15th in the series that says Wow. Oh, that Arts and Crafts Bungalow says it's 43rd in the nostalgic houses and shop series.

Oh my gosh, 43. Yeah, that's that's a whole lot.

That is, and I bet there's somebody out there that has all I'm sure. Yeah.

Um, the next page, my daughter liked the two at the bottom. So there's a little fairy, the uh crocus fairy she really liked. My youngest, you know, she's seven, and then uh she also liked mythical mermaids.

Yeah. So I can see that.

Yeah, I mean a seven-year-old little girl, that's that's probably what they're gonna like, you know. Yeah, but above that we get like more realistic looking birds, not quite as cute, and some butterflies.

Yeah, those birds stink, they're not funny at all.

No, there's nothing, there's no draw. It's just you really gotta like birds, I guess.

Well, it's just with those birds with the chubby cheeks. I feel seen when I on the first day of Christmas, my chubby.

Yeah, I understand. I understand, yeah. I do like the next page. They have some cool ones there. Uh so they have like a 12 days of Christmas um that I really like. It's just like a little choir.

Uh-huh. Yeah, I love that. I love that little choir.

Um, that's the that's called Lifting Their Voices. The 12 Days is actually the French hens. And then um the Nutcracker Ballet, and that one looks I don't know, it looks like if you pull it the string, it might move. Yeah, but it doesn't actually say it does, so I'm just assuming it does. And then, oh, I didn't even see Dumbo in there.

Yeah, dumb that Dumbo's cool too.

Yeah, Dumbo's pretty neat.

These kind of look like those um laser cut wood where they're layered, so they have the uh three-dimension to them.

So but yeah, that dumbo's cool. I really like that choir.

I do too. It's really cool. I don't think I really noticed it before.

Yeah, it has a real peanuts vibe to it.

It does because of the way that their heads are positioned and kind of backward with their mouths open. Yeah, you know. Uh it does. And then we get um like a kind of a waste of a page of just like the artists and sculptors that design these. Yeah, which is great. I mean, they need to be acknowledged because it's a lot of work and they really have a lot of talent. But also, like what most people don't care, they want to see the ornaments. Yeah, yeah, put that at the end, you know.

I do get the keepsak ornament club box.

Okay.

And if anybody's thinking about it, get it. It's it's it's like fifty dollars. And you get in the box, you get three ornaments that you can't get anywhere else.

You get a five dollar coupon that you can use, plus some other little you know, trinkets and stuff.

Plus, you get early access to the ornaments, and you can go in there and get the ones you want day early. That's cool. There's four more there on the table that you only you can buy in store. Nobody else can buy those. You know, and it's it's worth it. It's worth it.

And one of those is that uh a dancing Santa and Mrs. Claws. That one's nice.

Yeah, that one came in the box this year.

Oh, okay.

And that little Vitrola, it it plays it's got a little crank on it. It plays uh forgot the song, but it plays music when you turn the crank on it.

Yeah. Yeah, then you get that little jolly jolly paper streamer thing, which it's throw in, but it's very nice, very quality, you know.

Yeah. Well, it's uh Hallmark, you know, greeting cards makes sense.

Yeah, and plus two, those boxes are super nice, and you can use them for storage boxes all through the year.

So that's super cool.

So moving on to chapter two, Christmas Wonder. So it the next page has it's called the Night Before Christmas. It's eighty dollars, which is um insane. But I know that these things also it lights up, it rotates, um, and I think it even like tells a story, it seems, rotates to the story, yeah.

Well, the the thing is, is I think it was last year they had a peanuts ice skating scene that was like 120 bucks.

SPEAKER_00 21:33

Right.

SPEAKER_01 21:34

Which seemed crazy. Then you saw a store. It was huge.

SPEAKER_00 21:38

It was big, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 21:39

It was very big, so it was like, okay, maybe that's not so bad. So I imagine this thing's gonna be smile. I bet it's gonna be at least at least six inches around the top, you know, out the width of the dollar bill. I can't say for sure, but you know, it's gonna be it's gonna be pretty sizable.

Yeah, and that's the that's the the thing with these, right? You never really know the real size till you actually see it because it's just a photo. There's really no scale anywhere in there.

Yeah, and sometimes sometimes it's uh a computer image of what the production's gonna look like, you know.

Well, we get um some more snowmen there. There's a snowman in like an ice box, in the ice machine. Yeah, yeah, that's clever.

That's a frozen and carbonite. Yeah. I love that. Yeah. Uh we get um yeah, there's what, a little um elf security guy, like a security guard elf. What does he have? Is that a flashlight?

The lights are okay. That's cool.

Oh, it's motion activated, so Oh, alright. So if you try to peek, if you go to the it comes on, so right on.

Yeah. The snowman in the icebox is cool. But I now I really want a snowman like carved Han Solo style. Oh man. Um let's see. So moving on, there's a little pull string lion that's also seems like it's made out of wood. Yeah, yes. And and you pull the bottom, there's like a little star snowflake, and you pull the bottom, and I guess his legs move, maybe.

I think so, something like that.

Yeah, to see them to move the lion's legs, yeah. Uh there's that Santa that you were talking about, that vintage one.

That's pretty it's really nice too. I like that one a lot. Yeah. And there's also the nifty fifties uh keepsake ornaments, which that's like another collection I I uh that you you do that I get. Yeah. And what's cool is that those are all things that Hallmark actually sold in the 50s.

I mean, I imagine it's gonna be really nice, but for 150 bucks, I don't know if I can just like Clark's like 12 feet tall compared to the house. Right, right. They didn't make it to scale, which I guess would be impossible, but uh I guess, but or not impossible, but like financially it wouldn't make it I don't know.

So and I think it's one of those where they all kind of work together, right?
