What’s up, dudes? I’ve got AA and CM Chuck from Just Another Friday Night here to talk the remarkably well written Robotech! For a kids show, it tackled some pretty adult themes! There’s a love triangle, civilian casualties, and a successful villain mission? What?! It’s true!
It’s Christmas time, and Khyron is out for protoculture! This means he plans to lead a raiding party to take some by force. Meanwhile, Rick Hunter’s personal life is thrown into further disarray when his ex Minmei shows up unexpectedly due to her seasonal loneliness. And when his potential (and spoiler alert: eventual) love interest Lisa Hayes catches them in flagrante delicto, things get even more dicey! Khyron subsequently attacks, and while veritech pilots are scrambled, Lisa neglects to contact Rick due to her spurned heart. Overhearing the conflict on the news, Rick rushes to the city’s aid. Unfortunately Khyron is sneakily strategic, and plants bombs around the city. It’s get the bad guy or save the city time, so there’s only one thing to do!
There are multiple casualties and injured, but not even a Zentraedi attack can break the Christmas spirit! The faithful gather at a church to sing “Silent Night,” and Rick and Minmei share a meal and a kiss!
This Christmas episode is heart-pounding and gut-wrenching! It’s also a tribute to the human spirit and the spirit of Christmas! So grab your protoculture, hop into your veritech’s cockpit, and fly into this Robotech episode!!

Attention, Micronians, this is Chiron the Destroyer. I want to wish all the people of Earth a Merry Christmas, and I send you a special greeting from Santa Claus. May all of your foolish holidays be as bright as this one. We're talking Robotech. Hit it. Microsoft Windows 1.0 was released. Don't mess with Texas began as an anti-littering campaign. Jul Brenner died of lung cancer, and the Zentradi attacked on Christmas Eve. I'm your host, Jerry D with another episode of Totally Rad Christmas, the podcast that talks all things Christmas in the 80s, toys, movies, specials, music, and fads. If it was gnarly during Christmas in the 80s, we got it covered. Now joining me are two Totally Rad Christmas All-Stars from the Just Another Friday night podcast. It's double A and CM Chuck. Guys, how's it going? Man, it's going good. It's going awesome.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, man. Jerry, it's always rad to be talking with you, brother. Uh so yeah, like double A said, it's going pretty good. Right on. Right here in the I don't know when you're going to drop this one, but I know we're in the thick of your busy seasons. On Monday.
SPEAKER_05This is coming out Monday.
SPEAKER_11So for me to be on with a Christmas podcaster during the Christmas month is pretty special to me. You know what I mean? It's like we've made it now, we've arrived here.
SPEAKER_05Whatever. I'm small potatoes, man. But okay.
SPEAKER_11Come on, Jerry. We know we know you, man. We you're the infinity gauntlet holder of podcasts.
SPEAKER_05I just recorded my uh my 24th appearance, so uh it'll be it'll be 24 to yeah this afternoon.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, and you know, we just had you on on our episode from Masters of the Universe, and I just so much fun. Yeah, a great time, man. Thank you for coming on live, which I know is tough, but we wanted to congratulate on your 100th episode. Oh, oh yeah, you're yeah, all right, you're ahead of the curve on us, and I think you started maybe one month after us podcasting, I believe. When did you start? Very nice.
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, it was April 14th of uh 2020. 2020.
SPEAKER_11Yeah we started in March, March March 13th of 2020. But we know we do the one a week series, like amassing episodes.
SPEAKER_05Well, this is the season, this is the season, you know, and then I usually like from Christmas till about February 2nd, I'll take a break and then I'll start, I'll start going back. And then like in September, it's like okay, here we go. Boom, boom, boom. You know, it's a build up to Christmas.
SPEAKER_11You're a regular Kai Chiron the Conqueror yourself.
SPEAKER_05Okay, yeah, you know, he's purple too, I guess.
SPEAKER_11I was like, is he just malnutritioned, or you know, I know we'll get into it, but I was like, what's up with the purple? Is that a I I don't I'm not fully versed, but we'll get there. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05No, no, he's a whole he's he's from a whole other species.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, okay, okay. It is a thing, it is a thing. It is a thing, yeah. It's definitely a thing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so uh, you know, talking Robotech tonight. Uh what's y'all's like experience or what do you remember about Robotech?
SPEAKER_11I'm gonna let double A go first on this one because uh you'll hear what I have to say about this day.
SPEAKER_02So I already started this thing about 15 years ago, and uh my brother was he's you know 4879, so he lived through the whole 80s, you know, he remembers everything. If you remember Robotech game, they came out with this big old nice box set, like in the somewhere in the 2000s. He got it and we started watching, and I was just blown away by it. You know, this this was during that time span of Transformers and all this, but uh I can see why it wouldn't be popular like Transformers, because this one was just so much more serious, and it actually had like a big story, like a big big storyline. Where Transformers, you could watch an episode, and you know, you don't have to follow the other episodes, right? It was the Septic Cons are just trying to find Energy on to go back and you know and beat Optimus Prime and go back to the that's the whole series right there. Yeah, Thundercats, you know, it was just beat Mummera. Stay away from Mummer, beat Mumbra, you know. Yeah, yeah, same thing with He Man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But Rubble Tech is like a big old 36 episode, you know, saga, so it blew me away, and I love the characters and you know the dialogue. I was just like, wow, this is insane how good this is. Yeah, so yeah.
SPEAKER_11So for me, like I can honestly say that this episode that we watched was like my first full episode, and I remember you, you and your middle brother double-A when I would sometimes you know come over after school and you guys were watching stuff. It looked the art was similar, but I think you guys were watching Gundam at the time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Gundam Wings. Oh, no, no.
SPEAKER_11So this, like another guy right away when I yeah, when I saw this, I was like recognized that that art, obviously, which is very beautiful and like looks more kind of like not like a kid's cartoon. Um but I never really watched it, heard the name, saw the stuff. But again, I know at one time I think we talked, Jerry, we kind of said, you know, you were more like a Voltron guy for me when it came to big robots. It was Transformers, and I was kind of like that. I was good on I checked that box, so I didn't it wasn't that I didn't like the other ones, I just didn't ever really watch them, but I was open to it. Right. But through this one episode, I did see I was like, Oh yeah, I might not have caught on to this in my youth because it was, you know, there was a lot going on, you know. I felt lost uh during the one I watched, but I found a great video on YouTube that kind of gave a little bit of context, and that that helped. Yeah, a guy pretty much, you know, like I learned that it was like three different Japanese cartoons, yeah, and they had writers come in and Americanize it and tie them together, and things they took out and added in, and the narration over the top. And I was like, Wow, that's uh that's pretty you know, talented to take three different shows and make them into one, you know what I mean? So uh it was pretty cool. I I I dug it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, this is and and I'm very similar to you. This so I had never actually seen the cartoon until this particular episode as well. I had a couple of the toys, so so none of the the mechs, which I mean I figured I would have, but I was kind of like you. I was into Transformers, I was into Voltron. I was like, Yeah, I'm good with the mechs, you know, with the giant robots that transform. But I had I had Rick Hunter, I actually had the little figure of him, and I had Zor Prime as well. Those are like the two okay, the two that I had, but I used them just kind of like G.I. Joes and just kind of threw them in with whatever, you know.
SPEAKER_11I mean, you can't just cannon fodder, that's right, yeah, just everybody together.
SPEAKER_05But but Rick's outfit, you know, the white with the red and and the little blue lining. I mean, I always thought it was like super cool, and he had the little helmet that you could put on too. I I remember that from the toy, but yeah, I just I never caught it, and then so I watched this episode, was a little confused. Went, I mean, you can follow the episode fine, but I mean it's story-wise, I was a little confused, so I went ahead and and just started researching, and and yeah, it's like man, it's really cool. And and so I went back, I started watching some of the earlier episodes as well, and now it's like whenever I have downtime, I just kind of go through uh as much of an episode as I can. You're right, it's definitely more adult, but like it's just it's not quite kid friendly.
SPEAKER_02I mean, you know, there's there's actually yes, there is, yeah, but a lot of main characters die, which is very surprisingly, yeah. So I was like, holy crap.
SPEAKER_11So I wouldn't exactly I don't know if either of you guys would know, but like was it kind of written initially in Japan for adults, or you know, I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I never really listened to it.
SPEAKER_05I mean so so I I wouldn't doubt it, honestly, because I know a lot of the like like Voltron that uh you know what is it, go lion that it's that it's based off of yes, it's actually the same thing, it's much more adult, you know, oriented than kid friendly. I mean, it's still for children, but you know, it's much more higher level. So so I think Sven dies originally in that one as well.
SPEAKER_02And so oh okay, interesting.
SPEAKER_05So so yeah, same thing they kind of re-edit and recut and you know, then make you know how they do it with all the edits and cuts and stuff, and and so then they kind of went from there just because they had to pass the that that code, you know, they had to sensors, they had to make sure it was kid kid safe. But yeah, this one was crazy, just like so many people die and and like buildings are demolished, and they talk about like you know, the the destruction and the casualties are like far greater than we would have thought. I mean, it's like it it's real, it gets real in this cartoon. Yeah, and I think that's why why I like it and why I dig it so much because you you don't see that a lot, and I mean nowadays you can, but like, but back then you didn't, you know, and uh yeah, it was like uh it was like thank Thank Game was Sunday, all the people are out of the building.
SPEAKER_02That's right, yeah, right something like that, you know.
SPEAKER_11Exactly, yeah. And I'm sure now as at our ages now we could appreciate it a lot more because we're like, oh wow, this is like got a lot of depth to it.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I know there was you know, again, there's like a triangle in it, or or real bad.
SPEAKER_11Game of Thrones vibes were going on here. I was like, what's up here?
SPEAKER_05You know, yeah, yeah, yeah. So so definitely much more adult. So I I don't remember watching the cartoon, although I do recall seeing Rick Hunter on the cover of like a VHS from okay, like at the video store, and at the time I I thought it was Voltron just because he looks a lot like Keith from Voltron. Keith, yeah, yeah. So I was like, Oh, it's Keith. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, the hair, the eyes. I mean, it's just he's got that he's got that Keith vibe. So I was like, Oh, okay, but I we I never rented it because I I actually would go for the ones that actually had Voltron on the cover, you know.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I mean, like I said, I'd be exposed to this stuff, you know, through double A and his brothers. I'd go over there, you know. Well, we hung out all the time in the 80s, you know, as kids when I wasn't, you know, stationed with my dad somewhere else. And so I would just like sometimes catch stuff that they're watching. That's how I kind of did Dragon Ball with them, and the little bit of Gundam that I actually did see was with you guys, uh, you know, so but I'm sure you guys probably had this on, but I don't remember actually like differentiating it from one of the others, you know what I mean? But this was a cool episode. I mean, it hit your hit your criteria, definitely, right, Jerry 80s, and yeah, there's a Christmas episode.
SPEAKER_05So exactly. So let's so let's talk Robotech, yeah. So you're right, yeah. It was it was three different series that were done between '82 and '84, licensed out by Harmony Gold and Big West. Harmony Gold kind of took over after after Big West kind of folded, and they joined together with uh the Tatsunoko Productions and they released it in the US. But like you said, in order to sell it in syndication, and which they had to do because of its content, it was it was definitely, you know, like we mentioned, higher level and not so kid friendly. So they had to be sold syndication and not through the big three networks ABC, you know, CBS and NBC. And so the criteria for that was that you had to have at least what was it, 80 85 episodes, I believe, or something. Yeah, it was crazy. 65, excuse me, 65 episodes. It had to be at least 13 uh weeks of five days per week. Wow. So it only had 36 episodes, so they decided to release that macro super dimension fortress macros with Genesis Climber Mospita and Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross. Wow, and they they kind of I mean they really do inter interweave it in in an ingenious way, although I I haven't seen the the latter two series yet. So I'm I'm waiting for that, I'm getting ready. But I mean, you know, that there's like uh essentially, if we want to nutshell it, I guess it's alien ship crash lands on earth in 1999. Gotta love 1999. Far in the future, yeah. The year I graduated, the year I graduated. I I was 98, so I'm just just ahead of you. But yeah, so you it crash lands 99, they and it kind of ends like this big global war that was going on. They all kind of come together because they realize hey, if these aliens have this technology that's like super advanced, then you know we don't stand a chance. So they all came together, and for the next 10 years, they just like reverse engineer this this thing and they create these this this uh Veritech uh fighters that can be like cool jet planes, but also you know, cool uh giant robots, yeah. Which giant robots is always awesome, man.
SPEAKER_11All right, cool. If they transform even better, exactly, yeah. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_05As dumb as Pacific Grim was, it was awesome, you know. Like it was just it was cool. You just turn your brain off and you just enjoy the robots fighting the monsters, you know.
SPEAKER_11Well, this can they knew that there was a target audience for that, and they were like, We're gonna hit them right here with this right now.
SPEAKER_05That's right, exactly. Yeah, yeah, the Transformers and Voltron audience. But so so they create the this Veritech and this program where it's like the uh the this uh Robotech defense force, the RDF, essentially, and then all of a sudden, well, Rick Hunter, who's kind of like I guess the main star, although there's there's it's hard to say he's the main character because it it it almost feels like it's like it's an ensemble cast, ensemble, yeah, right? Yeah, yeah, and yeah, so it's kind of hard to say, but he goes to visit, he's just happens to be on this base, he goes to visit his brother or his adopted brother, Roy, and who's in this program with the RDF, flying these planes because they were originally like stunt pilots, they would they would do shows and stuff like that. So his brother joined the RDF after that, and uh, and so he's going to visit him, and that's when like an alien ship, the Zentrati, come and attack. And while they're doing that, and man, I'm going into detail for this nutshell version. But while they're doing that, the the uh the plane, which they call which they call RDF one, like comes alive and and like starts to just defend against the Zentrati. And so they I mean it's cool, it's like this battle, and then that's how Rick Hunter gets into this thing, and so it's really just following him and some of the the other RDF guys and their their journey to kind of get back to Earth because somehow they're teleported to like near Pluto. Okay, yeah, and but while he I mean again, there's like all these different relationships. So it's Rick, he kind of rescues this girl, Lynn. What is it, Minmei? Minme, yeah, and they kind of have a thing, but he also kind of has a thing for like Lisa Hayes, who's like one of the uh I mean, I don't even know what she is, like an operator or something. I don't I don't know, like the the flight control person, but uh so so he kind of they kind of have a thing later on, and then Min May leaves him for like her cousin. I mean it's third cousin, so it's okay, but uh but you know it and then when they kind of break up, then she like goes back, and that's where this episode takes place. So yeah, she's like a huge pop star already. She her her cousin, who's kind of like her manager, and I don't know, ex I guess they you know they they have a falling out, and so this episode, this Christmas episode, falls right during that time. So she's doesn't know what to do. She goes back to Rick, and of course she does, and but at this time Rick had already been captured with along with Lisa by the Zentrati, and somehow this is a little sketchy.
SPEAKER_02I don't know exactly how it goes, but somehow they were forced to kiss uh by the yeah, um because it yeah, it's because like the Zentrati doesn't know like any of that kind of stuff, so when they saw that like they get disgusted, and so that's actually yeah, they're like they're like they can't do that, you know. That's that's not normal, you know. That's disgusting, you know. So yeah, so that's how they escape in that episode.
SPEAKER_05Okay, that okay, that's that's hilarious. Um, but so so Lisa realizes she has feelings for Rick, also, and so that's what we get, you know, her in this episode, which we'll get into in just a little bit. So it's like Rick is kind of torn between these two girls. Spoiler alert, in the end, he marries Lisa. So uh at the end of the series, yeah, they get married, they're they're both admirals.
SPEAKER_11I liked her better in this one episode. I realized I liked her better. I was like, man, you know, because you know, I know we're gonna get to it, but like Min Mei kind of only goes to him in this episode because she's missing the she just needs somebody, yeah. Yeah, she's lonely, she's lonely, yeah. And it's Christmas, yeah. You don't want to be lonely on Christmas, right? So the it touches a lot of uh the like you know, kind of holiday vibe tropes, too. You know what I mean? So but yeah, I was like, Oh man, she's you know, because in the very beginning, you know, he's talking, he's thinking about Lisa. He's like, Man, she's mad at me. Maybe I should ask her to get a coffee, yeah. And then you know, and then when it cuts to Minme, she's like, Oh man, I miss her cousin, third cousin. She misses third cousin, third cousin, it's okay.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Like I said, Game of Thrones vibes, just keep saying it, keep saying it. Um but yeah, she then she like has this thought where she's like, you know, what are Rick's doing?
SPEAKER_00And I'm like, oh my god, yeah, like he was always there for me. Yeah. Min Me sits in the deserted park. Her recent separation from her cousin and business manager Lynn Kyle has left her feeling totally alone. The merry holiday season with its bright lights and frolicking crowds isn't making things any easier for her.
SPEAKER_02Goodbye, Minme. And God bless.
SPEAKER_01What's going to happen now? I don't want to sing anymore, that's for sure. But what else can I do? Oh, everybody has someone they can turn to, except for me, that is. Rick. I wonder what he's doing now. Probably having a wonderful Christmas dinner. Maybe I could no, I guess I shouldn't. Oh, Rick.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, classic ex that calls you when they're heartbroken, you know what I mean? I'm like, oh come on now.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, and it starts out with we meet Chiron, right? Chiron, yeah. So I don't know if you wanted to get into it already, Jerry. You got other stuff.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, no, we can. I I I mean, I pretty much kind of said what I wanted to say. I could go deeper into the the the lore of it, but I think I think we're good enough. I I'm ready to get into the Christmas part of it. But essentially, real quick before we do that, there is something called protoculture, which is right, it's it's like this energy that's kind of derived from this uh plant that what was it like the tree of life plant, yes, and it's spores.
SPEAKER_11Energon, energy.
SPEAKER_05I don't know what you're talking about. I don't know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_11Transformers earlier, and right when I watched this episode, I got that vibe. I was like, Oh, he's after the stuff that fuels that okay, all right. Megatron, I see, I see you, Megatron. Although this is older, right? Double A. This is this pre-dates transformers.
SPEAKER_05Technically, yeah, yeah. In the in the states, though, it actually was it was 85, was the year that it that it came out in the states, but it's actually older, yes, from 82.
SPEAKER_11So but I'm being I'm being stereotypical American, like, oh, you stole our ideas.
SPEAKER_05I did the same thing, I mentioned it on my Transformers episode. I did the same thing with the Power Rangers in Voltron. So when Power Rangers came out, I was like, You you just wish you were Voltron. And so so when my little brother, who's like five years younger than me, when he was starting to get into it, I was like, like, don't you dare like that. Because they just ripped off Voltron.
SPEAKER_10And then the colors and sorry, Danny, I'm sorry, animals and all that.
SPEAKER_05I'm sorry, Danny. Yeah, but uh but yeah, you're right. It that's that's kind of the vibe I got as well, because I knew Transformers first, and so but the Zentradi are basically human. I mean, they're they're looked very humanoid, they just have like purplish, you know, different colored skin. I think so. There's a few with different hues as well, but they're just bigger, they're like like giants, essentially. Oh, okay. And we see that with one of the one of the troopers there and he's walking around.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, when they're walking, remember when they're destroying the base. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, okay. And maybe I didn't pick up on it. When they're looking at when they're looking for your protocol.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I have a very specific note about that. Yeah, what when we get to that part, then I'm like, well, that's confused about this, but now that makes a lot of sense.
SPEAKER_05Y'all clarified that for me, but it's gonna make it'll be you just thought it was forced perspective.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I was like, I'll look dumb when it comes up in a minute because I'm gonna be like, What? I didn't get it, you know. Uh no worries, there we'll get there. So so go ahead though, Jerry.
SPEAKER_05So they start out, they're they're looking for the pro protoculture, which they need protoculture because so, and I think what happens is that the Zentrati and the humans kind of come to like an uneasy alliance, essentially, like they kind of make peace, but there's a splinter cell of the Zentrati that are like, like, nah, we're not we're not doing that. Like, this is our stuff, yeah, and and that's Chiron is the one that that leads it.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, there's there's always those purists, right? That are like, no way, we're gonna do it this way. We've got the old ways.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's right. Looking at you, Ron and the accuser.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, we're warriors, we're not supposed to be you know having fun and getting married and all that kind of stuff, or even uh Death Watch from the Mandalorian, the Mandalorian.
SPEAKER_11Oh, yeah, the Death Watch is the extremist sect of the Mandalorians. This is the way uh, yeah. Apparently, if you're an extremist member of an invading group, you're like, uh, there's gotta be a splinter cell to make them legitimized. But yeah, okay. So he says he makes his his bold claim, right? They're gonna go get this stuff, and it happens to be Christmas Eve, so pretty nasty, in my opinion, right there. I'm like, ah, dude, you're gonna commit acts of war on Christmas Eve. Like, that's the best time to that's that's what yeah, yeah. If you're a terrorist, they don't celebrate, they don't celebrate that holiday, right? And I was actually surprised. I mean, right? Because this footage comes from the actual Japanese cartoon. Like I and I this I'm gonna sound uncultured, I'm sure, but does do Japan the Japanese celebrate Christmas, Jerry?
SPEAKER_05Is that uh some of them do?
SPEAKER_11Okay, yeah, okay, okay, okay, cool. So I you know that you know it's in there, it's obviously the the the Christmas vibes are in this episode. So I was like, Oh, okay, all right. So that's me just being uncultured swine, not knowing. We're from South Texas, man. Everybody's suspended there. You know, I tell people we're up all night on Christmas Either. Like, well, when does Santa come? And I'm like, Well, we're I'm sure he's either he was there already or we missed him. So I was like, you know, we're we're up all night, so usually you're just usually wasted from the uh all the alcohol. I was gonna say, yeah, and then when we were little, we would just like pass out a midstar presence, and then it was like, All right, Santa was to come then when we were asleep.
SPEAKER_05But you're right, yeah. So Chiron, he's like, he's he's like, I'm gonna go attack and steal this. Meanwhile, we get Rick, you know, he's he's kind of doing his flybys, and and and like you said, he was in the cockpit doing his little you know route or whatever, yeah, patrol, and and he's thinking about Lisa because at this point he he kind of realizes he's has more in common with her, you know, because it didn't really work out. He was getting more into the RDF while Minme was getting more into her into her career, and she she didn't really want to be with someone like you know, that militaristic and dedicated to it, and and so she kind of broke up with him and you know all that jazz. But I mean it's like you wouldn't expect that from like an 80s kids cartoon, man. Like at all. I mean, did I think Lionel and Chitara, you know, get together? Yeah, probably, but I mean I wouldn't have uh you know, you never see it.
SPEAKER_11They didn't focus on it, and like in this, I got the story real quick because he was talking about Lisa, they introduced Minmei, and then I can hear them talking how one's talking about the other, like you know, Rick's thinking about Lisa, and Minme's thinking about Rick, and I was like, wait a minute, wait, what I was like, okay, there's something going on. So yeah, so like figure it out.
SPEAKER_02In the prior episode, he was supposed to have a date with Lisa, and he kind of blew her off a little bit because Minme called. So he spends almost like a he spends almost the whole day with Lisa, uh, with Minme, and she buys him like a scarf. Well, finally she leaves, and he's like, Oh man, Lisa, you know, so he goes on to her, and at first he he plays it off cool, and she's like, Oh, I'm just glad you're here, you know, blah blah blah. Oh, he puts his scarf, he wraps it around Lisa, and Lisa smells Minme's perfume. Oh, and she's like, with Minme the whole day, where aren't you? Like, dude, dude, come on, amateur, amateur movie.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I was like, you know, you didn't see Peter Parker doing that with Gwen and Mary Jane, right? He had his act together.
SPEAKER_02So that was like the episode prior. So, like in this episode, like like Jerry said he's patrolling, he's like, dang, you know, I really you know kind of messed things up with Lisa, and you know, he thinks she's there, he's like, Can I talk to Lisa? And she's like, Oh, she she didn't come in today. She didn't come in, yeah. Yeah, yeah, she's out.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, and then we get I don't know, double they fill me in, or maybe I don't know, Jerry. You probably felt like me about this, but there's like they showed the three vendors that are selling toys, and they were Zentratis.
SPEAKER_02Oh, there's a Zentratis, and they told him to go spy, so they have a way to actually downsize them. Yeah, yeah. That's great, it's not that great. Why? I shrunk the kids, and so they were supposed to be spies and kind of sending word back to the Zentrati, like what makes the humans like tick, or you know, right? What gets him excited, what gets him, you know, angry, that kind of stuff. But they they soon began loving the human life. And then they like their vendors, they're vendors, yeah, selling like Christmas toys. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I love their discussion. They're like, yeah, you know, the like I thought these things were supposed to just fly off the shelves, you know.
SPEAKER_11Right, right. And I love behind him. If you can look over the guy's left shoulder, the man guy, you can see the Godzilla mag, like it looks like maybe it's supposed to be a toy. But the one guy selling Christmas cookies, but I believe his vendor stance is cakes, it says Xmas cakes. Oh, okay. But he's like, Oh, these Christmas cookies are selling like hot cakes, and I'm like, Your science is not a good thing.
SPEAKER_02Unless they don't know, like I said, because they're they're like everything is like brand new to them, right?
SPEAKER_11Like, you know, cookies, you know, so it's like I thought it was like a biscuits and cookie thing, like England does. It's like okay, maybe I maybe I I get it though. These guys are selling stuff, these guys are selling stuff, and yeah, the one guy's like, you know, he sells one toy and he's like, go tell your friends, you know what I mean? Tell them to come and get some toys, you know. You see that Santa there, you see a Santa there. They show a Santa, and he's like uh looks a little non-traditional, but like the he's got like a like a big upper stripe. Yeah, I I noticed him right away. Yeah, I did too.
SPEAKER_05I was like, his costume looks a little non-traditional, but you know, but it's like it's it's it's over there, or Santa maybe looks like it's definitely something more Japanese because a friend of mine, he he's the host of a podcast about Japanese Christmas music called Holly Jolly X Masu, and he's like randomly on Instagram and Facebook, he always posts the covers. And I've seen this of something very similar, uh Santa looking very, very similar with that outfit on one of those covers. So it's got to be like their portrayal of it, which I thought was fascinating. As soon as I saw it, I was like, that looks really familiar, and so I had to go back to the stuff and let's see. That's funny.
SPEAKER_11That's funny. Jerry, you need to double-A in that guy on this episode, not me. We call it totally Japanese Christmas podcast. There you go.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but no, I was just trying to pick up the little vibes. I know it's hard, like they said, because this is already like episode 35 or 36. Okay, so yeah, you just missed out like the whole story. So some of it's pretty much, yeah.
SPEAKER_05It's like the end of that, like that first week series, really.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, but you know, like I said, the little video I watched for context on YouTube helped the guy explained it really well. It was about 18 minutes, and like that a little bit alone familiarized me with some of the characters. Yeah, but yeah, and then again, it I I knew that without me knowing anything about it, I was either gonna love it or hate it, but it was like I definitely didn't hate it. I was like, Oh, it's cool. I felt like you, Jerry, like I was like, Oh, I could go back and watch some more to try to grasp grasp more of the concepts, you know.
SPEAKER_02But I mean, like I said, this episode is just like love triangles, yeah, yeah, you know, trying to fight off an alien invasion.
SPEAKER_11It has more, yeah, it has more of a Hallmark movie feel than it does uh uh you know a mech you know robot, which you can see. Oh man, it's kind of episode of Transformers.
SPEAKER_05I totally I totally want to see the Hallmark Robotech movie.
SPEAKER_10Dude, that would be fantastic.
SPEAKER_05Hallmark, call us, we'll write it, we'll write it.
SPEAKER_11Uh yeah, because there's a great scene too where Rick's lamenting and then he kind of looks up and starts to snow on him, right? Yeah, so that's always like you know, again, it's like signaling the you know Christmas season, yeah, you know, right? He's like, Oh, it's snowing, you know. And so you're like, okay, cool. But like I said, then we cut to the guys with the robots and and they're selling stuff, and then they're they're like, We should go to the park. There's kids at the park. Yeah, and I'm like, okay, they go and then they see they don't know it's Min May at first. They're like, There's a kid right there. There's a kid, yeah. And I'm like, like they're all excited. I'm like, what do you're not gonna unload your whole lot of toys on this one kid? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05They I guess they don't know any better, man. Yeah, they don't know. Although it was a little, it was a little creepy, you know. Hey, there's a kid. It's like, no, no, no, no, not gonna fly it.
SPEAKER_11How about how about how Minme runs off? She runs off like she's afraid of them.
SPEAKER_02Like, that's all right, Min May. Yeah, and she so like early in episode two, she had me furniture them. Oh so they got like super excited when they're like, Hey, it's Min May, and they're like, Hey Min May, it's us, you know. But she like runs and they're like, Okay, dudes are like, What's going on? Yeah, I thought we're like there. I was like, I thought we were friends.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I figured it was because she was like the pop star thing, and she was like, I don't want to deal with these fans, I'm out of here. Like, you know, she just takes off. I don't know.
SPEAKER_05I mean, there might have been a little bit of that too.
SPEAKER_11I don't you know, yeah, because she's swinging on the swing at the park, she's thinking about that. She starts thinking about the the failed relationship. Because apparently the the the third cousin is also her was her manager. Yes, it was her manager too, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Again, on the previous episode, he does a concert, he sets up a concert, and she just she goes on stage and she just leaves, she runs off uh and blows the whole concert, and she's like, I don't want to do this anymore. Blah blah blah. And that's where you saw the okay, where them two have their fight, you know. Like, yeah, he's like, You're not supposed to do that, you know, you got a responsibility, blah blah blah. You know, she's like, I don't want to do this anymore, I'm done, I'm tired of it.
SPEAKER_11So wow, okay, interesting. Yeah, she she kind of lauren hilled it there on him. I'm out, I'm out these days. And and here, here I'm thinking it was him, and I was like, Come on, he was too, because he starts getting more violent.
SPEAKER_02Oh as the as it progresses.
SPEAKER_11Uh if the Jackson 5 taught us anything, don't let family manage you. So he he starts going Joe Jackson on her, and not cool, not cool, many.
SPEAKER_05Which again is like a super adult concept for like this.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, the whole thing, right? Yeah, yeah, like like the the troubled pop star. Jerry, I know you're a huge music guy. I mean, it's like you know, double A2. It's like dude, those crazy managers, man. That's wild. Yeah, so here I'm thinking, I didn't even think it went that deep. I thought it was just like a love relationship caught her to sleeve, you know.
SPEAKER_02They they start, you know, bickering, he starts becoming an alcoholic, he starts violent. Okay, he starts kind of telling her, You need to go here, you need to go here, you need to start performing there, there. You know, it pretty much burns her out. Yeah, yeah, takes away all that fun away for her.
SPEAKER_11So yeah, so he's the he's the Colonel Parker to her LGB. Yeah, that's right.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, there you go. That's good analogy. Yep.
SPEAKER_11That guy sounds like a real scumbag to me. I don't like it.
SPEAKER_05That's why you don't date date third cousins, y'all.
SPEAKER_11Or let them run your business. Or at least don't let them run your business. There you go. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Uh so so yeah, she runs back to Rick's place, you know, and and he's like, I guess I'll let you in.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, it's all like, okay, come in.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you know, happy Lisa?
SPEAKER_11Nah, she's still mad at me. Minme.
SPEAKER_01Hello, Rick.
SPEAKER_04Hello, Min May.
SPEAKER_01Uh I uh May I come in?
SPEAKER_04Sure, why not?
SPEAKER_01I probably should have called you first. I'm sorry, Rick. I don't want to impose.
SPEAKER_00Hey, what's wrong? Why don't we go inside where it's warm?
unknownHuh?
SPEAKER_05Don't worry. It's okay. I mean, but it was she was kind of like his first love, right? I mean, he like like he saves her. That's like his first real, you know, like his first real love. So I mean, you know, he's got like that that deeper connection, even though he's already the Gwen.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, the Gwen Stacy, yeah, right, right. Yeah, yeah. So he lets her in, he doesn't lock his door, which is very not smart, Rick. Lock your door, close your door behind you.
SPEAKER_05The 80s. Oh, I guess it wasn't. It was the 2000s. Never mind, yeah. You know, he that's terrible.
SPEAKER_02He's the leader of the skull squadron, so who's gonna go ahead and do it? Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_11He's a resident tough guy, so he's not worried.
SPEAKER_05Which he kind of he took he took that over from his uh Roy. His Roy, yeah, his brother who had passed away.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. He assumes the leadership, and then uh he gets his buddy Max in there too, which we see later on.
SPEAKER_05Max the blue hair guy, did he come out this way? Okay, yeah, he did just for a little bit towards the end, yeah.
SPEAKER_11And then we cut to another scene, right? Uh Double with the uh she's a she a captain.
SPEAKER_02Uh yes, she was she was the fiance of Roy. Yeah, okay. So she's kind of like feeling a little bit.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, the narrator it shows her going into the pub, and the narrator's like, she's gonna drink away her source. Yeah, she's going so far. I was like, wow. Again, I'm like, this was a kid cartoon. Yeah, wait a minute.
SPEAKER_05That's what I'm saying. It's like, I get why I missed this cartoon.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I don't even if I could have seen it, I don't know if my parents would have let me, you know. Yeah, or they probably would have, I wouldn't have gotten it, you know. I mean as a kid, I wouldn't have understood, but but yeah, it's like like super high level there. But it's just it's funny because well, she caught a cab, she caught a cab in the pub.
SPEAKER_11It wasn't like she was true, that's true. Yeah, she wasn't gonna hop in the mech afterwards, and you know, don't don't drive your mech robots drinking driving.
SPEAKER_02That's like another kind of Christmas theme, right? Kind of a sad Christmas thing, yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know, you think of your lost one, and yeah, it makes me think of uh that year, first Christmas without him.
SPEAKER_05It makes me think of Prince and his song Another Lonely Christmas, you know.
SPEAKER_11Nice, nice, very nice, Jerry. Deep but so that's cool. So that character kind of only comes out briefly right there. Just in that episode, in that episode, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Because because while Min May goes to Rick, Lisa's on her way there too. Yes, and she's like, you know, this is that classic thing that always happens in Hallmark movies. This is I think you're right. This is the Hallmark movie of of the of the series.
SPEAKER_11Um now we know they stole their their bit from Robotech.
SPEAKER_05Robotech, yep, you heard it here first, folks.
SPEAKER_11There it is, there it is.
SPEAKER_05Breaking news, Hallmark stole from Robotech, but yeah, so so Lisa's on her way over, she's gonna tell Rick how she feels, and you know, forgive him and all that stuff, and and and she, of course, happens to get there while Min May shows up and hugging it out, right? Gives him the huggies, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Min May leave left the door open, so she heard the whole like them conversation, she heard everything, so she's devastated and she goes to the bar to drink.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, she yeah, poor thing, you know. And you I felt for that character because I was like, Oh no, here it comes. And I thought Rick was just being a nice guy. I was like, Oh, he's just being a nice guy, you know, and but he got kind of caught in that moment, yeah. Yeah, and and he's kind of sick too in this one. He has like a cold or something, I think, right? Because at one point, like I think maybe I might be wrong about the six. I think so.
SPEAKER_05I think she just I think that's just the excuse that she tells him because why she doesn't want to call Rick later on, you know.
SPEAKER_11That's right, he's supposed to be sick, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Um, and then like later on, you see Minme and Rick hanging out, and like she she prays for him, she cooks for him. So I'm thinking, like, oh, she does care about him, you know what I mean? You know, in the back of my mind, I'm like, she's still just kind of lonely. She's you know, the things you do when you're like trying to, you know, win someone back, you know what I mean? So right, I had some different notes here. I kind of put like Min Mei seems a little needy. I put it's nice that she prays and cooks for him, and then I put here I get a little bit of like trollop vibes. She's a little bit of a trollop. I don't know, I don't know her that well, but what a good word.
SPEAKER_05That's a good word.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, it's edited for Jerry's show uh notes right here.
SPEAKER_05I appreciate it, appreciate it. Yeah, but I I do like how there is kind of like uh you know, you that feeling you mentioned, you know, is it real or is it just the loneliness? But Rick kind of gets that you know, he's thinking that as well, you know. He's like, Like, I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I mean, she has been through a lot, and yeah, but and she gives him the whole sob story, you know, right and you know, her current her cousin, you know, because he asks about him, right? He's like, Well, where's he? You know, and they hate each other, they they have a lot of people. Well, I mean, that makes sense, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's there like throughout the whole series, they they just completely hate each other. Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_11Like a little bit like Romeo and Juliet vibes, too, as well. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Like, good, you left Kyle, finally.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_10A brief Robotech intermission was required for these urgent messages.
SPEAKER_00Robotech shall now resume transmission.
SPEAKER_05But he gives her like it, he he gives her like his room and he goes to sleep on the couch. On the couch, yeah. Which is good, that's a good gentlemanly thing, but very nice, yeah.
SPEAKER_11But at one point she comes out of the room, and I'm always remember, I was thinking, like, uh-oh.
SPEAKER_05I was like, where is this going? This anime, you know.
SPEAKER_11That's right when I wrote my note. Minme might be a trollop. I was like, I did cross it out though. I crossed it out later.
SPEAKER_05I was like, okay, good, good, good.
SPEAKER_11Well, because when he gets called off, right?
SPEAKER_02You know, well, yeah, well, he sees it on the TV because Lisa does it for whatever reason she doesn't call him. I know that it's like hey, but it's like that's one of your best pilots.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, so uh yeah, the the Zentrati attack.
SPEAKER_01Ground-based security. Centrati forces are attacking the industrial section. Emergency communique for all scramble alert. Repeat all their attacks. This is a scramble alert.
SPEAKER_08Bring squadron to the industrial section of sector one immediately.
SPEAKER_05So Lisa's on duty, and you know, she she doesn't want to call him because of the whole emotional, relationshipy, lovey, whatever thing. And so, yeah, they it's like, okay, whoever's there, let's go. And that's kind of how it is, you know, which is like crazy. It's like they're literally attacking.
SPEAKER_02Come on, just like come on, put that feelings away, you know, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Hey, not to not to plug our show too early, but to call back to our episode about masters of the universe. That'd be like if Skeletor and and all the horde are attacking, and they're like, Tila doesn't call he-man because she's you know upset about him.
SPEAKER_05I'm like, 'cause she's still mad that he didn't tell her he was Adam.
SPEAKER_11No, no, no. Call He-Man. You you call it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, this is where we we see Max again. So luckily, yeah, Max, because Max is considered the ace out of the whole thing. Yeah, he's actually better than Rick is, yeah. Yeah, okay. With his wife, who was a former Zentradi. Oh, nice. Yeah, so they ended up getting married, you know. So okay, cool, cool.
SPEAKER_03Apparently they do like figure it out. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, so then they call him and he gets uh, I guess you could say deployed out.
SPEAKER_02He finally sees it on the TV, he's like, Hey, that's my sector. How come no one called me? And he comes out, he goes to his you know, his tech, and you know, yeah, but it's too late by that point. Yeah, because they're bombing.
SPEAKER_05Because this is now Christmas Day, yeah. So it's it's Christmas morning, and and yeah, they and it's crazy, man. They they like put bombs across the city as a distraction. I was like, that's like that's brilliant, but at the same time, like that's hardcore, man.
SPEAKER_11With the Santa, yeah, yeah, with the Santa too. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, that came back.
SPEAKER_02I forgot that that callback to that line that Jerry said in the beginning of the episode. I was like, oh, that's super dark, right?
SPEAKER_11That's an extremely dark Christmas tale. I was like, they just bombed out like that whole anyone that survived that is like traumatized towards Christmas now. Oh, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08I want to wish all the people, all of you, I'm gonna get it.
SPEAKER_05And it's not really like a happy ending at all either. It's not at all. I mean, we'll get to when we get there, but I mean it's it's crazy. It's like it I mean, yeah, people live, but like they literally say in the episode there are so many more that have died from this this attack. Like, oh snap.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, that would be like if like when you know Batman v Superman, if that fight with the Kryptonians and Superman happened, but it happened to be Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Bruce Wayne is seeing all this city get destroyed and saving little girls. It's like, dude, way darker when you put it on Christmas. Like wow, no ceasefire, no nothing. So at that point, I was like, uh Chiron, you earned your villainy right here, sir.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. Wow, totally put in with like you know, Megatron and and all the the heavy hitters. I mean, this dude, like legit, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But a lot of a lot of great imagery though, after you know, they put out the oh yeah, yeah, that was pretty beautiful.
SPEAKER_11I thought that yeah, yeah, it doesn't take a lot for me to choke that, but I was like, all right.
SPEAKER_05There's like a Catholic priest in front of like the statue of the sacred heart of Jesus, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, which I was really surprised when I saw it again. I was like, Oh wow, Jesus, you know, yeah, that's that's exactly what I thought too.
SPEAKER_05I was like, wow, they actually put that in a cartoon. Yeah, again, I couldn't believe it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, as the smoldering fires begin to die down, people throughout the city are no longer thinking about Christmas, but are grateful just to be alive.
SPEAKER_06Six hours have passed since the first reported attacks on the industrial sector by tired forces. All fighting has stopped casualties are flooding into the emergency rescue sector.
SPEAKER_05You're right. There's like a lot of just uh craziness, and they're watching on the news, and Minme gets so scared because uh you know Rick has gone off to fight, and and you know, she's like just so worried about if he's gonna survive or not, because you know the the reporters are saying there's so many casualties, and so yeah, I mean she just gets all worried about it so that so much so that at the end of the episode she even asks him to like quit the RDF.
SPEAKER_11Right, yeah, and in that scene, I think that's when she does the praying for him, right? Am I right, Jay? She does that you know phrase for him, you know, which is I always like love that, you know what I mean? So yeah, it's it's it's pretty cool. I mean, like I said, there was a lot, and then of course, you know, the triumph of the human spirit is like you know, a key element, and it's like despite this thing happening, they're still like you know, um I guess you say hopeful, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's what I wrote down.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, um so so like they they actually go to fight the Zentrati, you know, and it's like they have the protoculture because the Zentrati take it, and so it's like you know, then the bombs they they start setting off the bombs. It's like, well, do I go after them or do I help the people down there? And so at that point, it's like a no-brainer, they gotta they gotta help the people, you know.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, so yeah, I mean it's classic.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's it's it's kind of heartbreaking in a way, you know. Yeah, it was it was expecting guys to stop the bad guys if they don't. I was like, what's the deal? Jerry always giving me these these sad ones. Did you hear? Well, this one you can blame on double A, man. Yeah, that's that's what Mark, yeah, that's what Mark, yeah, but very nice. This is a great pick, yeah. This really was deep cut.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, and I was like, Man, like a lot. We got a lot in like what is it? Is it only like 24 minutes?
SPEAKER_05It's only yeah, it's only like 22, 23 minutes, something like that. Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_11I'm telling you, I aged in this episode. I was like, Oh my goodness, it's just who it was heavy. I was like, All right, you know, but good stuff. I mean, that was it was really cool, it was really cool.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, to see like all the buildings on fire and everything. I mean, it was it was brutal, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, and then the love triangle is you know, starting out with that, and then like you know, because again, I was thinking that in myself because you don't uh actually see the robot form in this one. No, no, just uh not really. So, but again, I was completely enthralled where I was like, without remembering that, I was like, Oh, aren't there supposed to be giant robots in this? And I was like, I didn't even miss them because it was such a powerful story.
SPEAKER_05You're right, it was very well written. It the the writers they did a great job of tying it all together. The dialogue, like you mentioned earlier, was was uh I thought it was was great, uh, you know, better than a lot of the other dialogues from the time. Yeah, yeah. I I love filmation, but come on, this He-Man's got nothing on this.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, well, just like we said, the concepts, you know, the concept of that. I don't know that another show would have been bold enough to tackle that of uh a massive attack on Christmas. It's like they would have probably felt affronted, like other shows might have been like, we can't write that like that, we can't do that. Yeah, like that's not gonna fly. So to to imagine they even showed this on you know American TV at one time, and kids were probably into it because of the robots, has been like, Whoa, you know, but like Jerry said earlier, it's like some of that stuff you might have missed as a young person. But I mean, man, even if you probably would have, yeah. Imagine if we were even in our teen years at that time, we would have probably been like, Well, that's pretty heavy.
SPEAKER_05For real, yeah. Uh good stuff. It it really was. I I like how so after after the battle, after they save every you know, as much as they can, like Rick, he kind of gets after Lisa. He's like, Why didn't you call me? This was my sector, you know.
SPEAKER_02And I mean, I was like, I agree with him. I was like, Yeah, well, I mean, it's true.
SPEAKER_05She should have she should have put her emotions aside and like gotten the dunk duty. Lives were at stake, you know.
SPEAKER_11It crossed my mind too. I was like, you know, again, she's pretty heartbroken every way to witness like uh right, work war. Work comes first, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I mean, eventually she's Maverick, you know what I mean? Uh you know, they're both maverick.
SPEAKER_05I mean, she eventually does like you know, ascend in the ranks, like she becomes an admiral as well, which which is a testament to her abilities because she's actually really good. I mean, she's the one that uh when when he gets trapped in like Roy's jet in in the very first episode, you know, and you know, he can't control it. Like some something gets damaged, and he's like, What's going on? She's like, Yeah, just transform to whatever. And he's like, What are you talking about? And she kind of talks him down. She's like, She gets in that first one. It's funny because she's she's like, What do you mean you don't know? Like, like, just lower it to the you know, press the lever down to this or whatever, and and like she can't believe that it's not like a trained RDF, yeah, you know, pilot in there, right? And so it transforms into the robot, and you know, whatever, whatever he saves Min May, and and that's how they that's how he and Minme meet, like like he he saves her, but it's funny because Lisa's the one that's there that's talking him down, you know.
SPEAKER_11Uh that's cool. No, that's cool. That they it seems like they kind of focused too on like giving like females important roles. Oh, big time, yeah. Big time that's pretty pretty awesome. Yeah, uh, I know you said earlier, Jerry, you know, that he eventually Rick eventually ends up with Lisa, but what becomes of Min Maid? That does she she goes on, right?
SPEAKER_02As far as I know, just to keep doing the pop stars, yeah. That's okay, she gets back on it, gets back to it. Okay, that's cool.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I mean he he tells her Rick tells her, right? Because she's super talented and all that. You know, yeah, you're really great at what you do, you know what I mean? But I get being burned out, you know. She's gotta do one of those one of those progressive artist moves, right? And start doing like a do a rap rock album.
SPEAKER_03You gotta branch out, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_11You gotta, you know.
SPEAKER_05I don't know if I can picture her rap rocking or rock rapping or whatever.
SPEAKER_11See, we gotta write that joint story where she joins the the five, six, seven, eight, nines from Kill Bill.
SPEAKER_05Oh, oh, there you go.
SPEAKER_11The new bassist for them, and it's like that's her continued story, continued story there, right? There, see, there you go, boom. Writes itself, boys. There you go.
SPEAKER_05And cash the check. Let's do it. Yep, yep. So he goes back home. Like you mentioned, Minmei has uh cooked him dinner, and you know, there's candlelight, and it's all fancy, and they kiss, you know, and he gets caught up with a woman. I thought that was too.
SPEAKER_11I was like, what about Elisa? I was like, dude, you're such a jerk. What did she cook? Was it turkey? There was no turkey.
SPEAKER_05I don't know food. I don't know if it was anything specific. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Was it still Christmas night? It's Christmas night.
SPEAKER_05It's yeah, so it's it's yeah, Christmas night.
SPEAKER_11I mean, you know, tough though, right? Like, you know, Rick's town just got bombarded, and you know, and you there's probably a lot of emotions, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05So I you know, I don't necessarily mad at Lisa, and he's mad at Lisa as well. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_11He's thinking lives could have probably been saved, and so that's a rough, that's a tough call. I won't judge Rick.
SPEAKER_10I won't say it's so there's so much going on again.
SPEAKER_02Right, you're not gonna see this like a transform, right? You're not gonna see you know Chitaro being mad. Yeah, I mean, it's like like you kind of get more panther, right?
SPEAKER_11There's uh yeah, it's not black and white, it's not black and white, there's a lot of gray area, like there is, yeah. I get the conflicted feelings on all this stuff. I mean, it's like you're emotionally drained like that, and you're just like this one nice gesture, she makes him a meal after he's like been. I mean, it's like well, man, yeah, I just want to feel comfort at this point, you know.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, uh, but but I I like the on that Christmas night, there's like you know, as they're picking up the rubble, people are going to like the church, and they just start, you know, the priest is just like I mean, he's you can see like he's just uh heartbroken, almost maybe even losing his faith, I suppose, by all the devastation. Yeah, and uh you know, but but then the people just start singing silent night, and I was just like, What? Like they they wrap it up like real Christmassy, man. Yeah, very much so.
SPEAKER_02The whole fortress too gets lit up, it's lit up, yeah. It was yeah, it's really nice.
SPEAKER_11You put silent you put silent light in anything for me, and and CM Chuck is rolling a tear or two for sure. I'm like, that song gets me, man. I'm like, so yeah, that that was what I mean, like that triumph of the human spirit at the end.
SPEAKER_05Can they make the sign of the cross?
SPEAKER_11Yeah, yeah, it's very cool. Like again, like I was like super mature, super adry. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05It's it's funny. Uh you mentioned Silent Knight because I I never really liked it. It was always like, Oh, we gotta sing that one again until until my son was born, and he was born in October, so it's close enough to Christmas that when I would rock him to sleep, as a I'd use it as a lullaby because it's kind of lullaby-ish.
SPEAKER_11It is, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And ever since then, it's like it's my favorite, what like my favorite carol. So wow, awesome. Yeah, so just because of that connection now, it's like I I think of my son when I when I see Silent Night. So so when they started singing, I was like, Oh, it got me.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, awesome, awesome. I always feel too like Silent Night's like the song that movies or shows pull out like clutch when you need that moment. They're like, All right, bring in silent night, and you're like, Now you if I wasn't there there right now, the extra Christmas field horror movie. Yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_05I just did an episode on that one, yeah.
SPEAKER_11I haven't heard that one yet, but I saw you had that out there. Yeah, yeah. My favorite scene in love actually is you know, that's what you know, Andrew and oh uh yeah, Rick uh Rick, yeah, your hands, yeah. He plays that in that scene, and I was like, ugh, like because that scene is heavy to me, you know what I mean. So um, but yeah, that's the song playing, so great, great tune. But me and uh that's an awesome story, Jerry, about your sons. Me and Double A. We've had so many conversations off air about songs like that that like the artists will tell you how the meaning changed for them, you know, like Eddie Vetter with Alive. Oh yeah, and you know, we've talked about like just had a conversation, you know, double A was telling me we're sticking with Pro Jam, but like he's the one that kind of told me the meaning of better man. I never really paid attention to it, I just liked it for you know the way it was, and then he was like, Oh man, that song's about this, and then I was like, Great, double A. Now I'll never hear that song the same way again, like you know, completely changed different. But you know, we have these conversations, we never turn the mic on. I'm like, dude, this is we should be recording this. But I love a story like that where it's like something for you changes the meaning of a song, uh, or you know, an experience. It could be a movie, too. I think it can happen with a movie, you know, you watch it with somebody or somewhere, and then it's like forever related to that time, you know.
SPEAKER_02But uh, it was placed uh really good in this episode, though. I mean, I think so too. Really, really well, you know. After all that destruction, you you know, you're still keeping the the faith, yeah, keeping the spirit up, you know. So yeah, yeah, yeah. I thought that was awesome.
SPEAKER_11I got a little bit of Grinch Grinchlow Christmas vibes, you know what I mean? Because I was like, Yeah, yeah, he was like, What they you know, I'm sure Kai Runner was like, they sing without buildings, they sing without houses.
SPEAKER_03I was like, Kai run, they're still singing chiron.
SPEAKER_05Well, doesn't he? He does like a suicide run, right? At the at the very end, yes, very end.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he just you know what? Forget all you guys. I'm just gonna ram it out, yeah, ram it down. So it's crazy, yeah. And even then, how about that, Andy? Yeah, that's a suicide dive. I'm like, wow. Megatron wouldn't do that. Yeah, no, well, no, Megatron loves himself too much.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, same thing with Cobra Commander, yeah. You wouldn't either, yeah, go throw somebody else.
SPEAKER_11We saw what skeletor did, he was willing to die, but only if he could come back. He's like, I'm not really willing to die, I die.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. Like I'm I'm like a like a parasite eating off your magic. That's all, yeah.
SPEAKER_11You know, which is an interesting concept, right? Where it's like so to Kai Run, it was more important to eventually win, even if I'm in his own demise, where the villains we're talking about, you know, other classic 80s villains is like, no, I'm too selfish to sacrifice myself, right? Right.
SPEAKER_05I'll do just I'll sacrifice just about anybody else with to win, but which reminds me of the Avengers when after Colson, you know, when Colson's been stabbed, and you know, he's like, You can't win. He's like, Why? You know, tell me where my you know where I'm going wrong. He's like, You lack conviction, you know, and that's kind of that's kind of that thing there, you know. The all those guys, they they really do lack conviction, but Chiron has it. I mean, he he's he's like, No, I'm gonna win, and my side's gonna win, even if I can't be there to see it. And yeah, you know, you don't really get a lot of that.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, no, not at all. That that was when makes it that's intense, that's pretty intense, you know, the whole thing. So I say it made me it made me a fan. I'll go watch some more Robotech for sure.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, for real. I'm telling you, it's good. After that, and we'll I'll just briefly run through some of the others real quick. So after that, we get the uh the robot masters saga. So it's like they're the ones that created Robotech, you know, this technology that can actually transform and all that, and they go back to to kind of reclaim it essentially, and so then that's like the second robotech war, and then that ends with the protoculture being what they thought was destroyed, and it turns out it actually just spread the spores of the tree of life all throughout Earth, and the Nvid, who's like this this this even worse, you know, kind of enemy, they come because they they feed off the tree of life spores, and so they they come to Earth, they find it real easily now because it's covered in it's covered in the spores.
SPEAKER_11So I just find Cobra Commander right there, Jerry. Can you get Cobra Commander to jump in and be like, the spores?
SPEAKER_05I can't really can't do Chris uh what's his name very well.
SPEAKER_11Awesome. Awesome. Just get just get the audio, Jared just punch it in right here. That's all right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03The spaws.
SPEAKER_11Did you watch all three double A? Did you get the no no because just the the Macross? Am I saying it right? Macross. Macross Macross, yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, because uh I had I had heard that they weren't as great. I mean, I'm yeah, I've been thinking about it because they did re-release the the Robotech Masters, they did re-release that on Blu-ray, so I'm thinking about checking it out. But at the time there I didn't hear too many good things about the other two. Did they remaster the animation? Right, I think so. Like I don't think Rick's in there.
SPEAKER_11No, in the video that I watched, it says since it was three different shows, they kind of like they take place like a much different time, so they make it sound like they they make mention of the other characters.
SPEAKER_02Max's baby becomes like the lead character in like the third one, I think.
SPEAKER_11Okay, yeah, yeah. So and I know they said they had to take some stuff out, like edit some of the episodes so that way they made it make them. So it would make sense. Yeah, and a lot of the overhead narration would be like blah blah the son of so-and-so or whatever, so that it can kind of tie it back, and then they'd have the characters make mention of it, but it was supposed to be like X amount of years, either I think later or something like that.
SPEAKER_05Right, right. Because I think the third one's called what the next generation or something like that. Something like that, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_11Which again, I thought was pretty clever writing. Because imagine someone gave you three different shows and said, Hey, make this one. Time all together. I'd be like, I don't know, you know, like what do they have in common? You know what I mean? There's robots, okay. We go with that.
SPEAKER_05It's it's funny because I remember very clearly going to service merchandise in the plaza mall. And I don't know if you remember service merchandise, I don't know if you guys had it in San Antonio, but and I remember it's like you had to go, like you'd walk in and then you go to the right, and it was almost like a little maze that you'd kind of follow, and then you'd get to the toys. And I remember seeing the Robotech figures, and when I I remember actually seeing Rick, and I still remember the day when I we bought Rick, you know, it was it's it's just like like one of those, and I don't remember a lot of that, but that's one that's like burned in my brain because I just I thought he looked so cool. I was like, Man, that's a cool you know outfit, and uh and he's got the helmet, and you know, it wasn't a G.I. Joe, but what's that?
SPEAKER_11Have you looked it up on eBay just to see? Like, what does it go for?
SPEAKER_05I I haven't seen how much it costs. I just looked up.
SPEAKER_11I'd be curious, I'd be curious to know.
SPEAKER_05I don't I don't think those figures would be worth the figure that the yeah, they're G.I. Joe size, so they're probably not super expensive. I'd say maybe like mint on cards, probably you know, worth something, but uh just regular, I don't think it would be worth but probably the robots, right?
SPEAKER_11If you have any of the old robot, oh no, I didn't have any of those, yeah. I would I would be curious to see, like, and yeah, that's so funny to me because I can't think of ever running into that. You know, a lot of the times when I was buying toys, we were at the on the PX. He probably just passed by it. Maybe he passed by it, yeah. But I mean, I think I knew I would see He-Man, I knew I would see Transformers, I knew I would see G.I. Joe's. And it's kind of funny because like while we had Thundercats, I don't really remember ever seeing them in stores. I would see the other ones, the big three, and then when the turtles became big, you'd see the turtles everywhere. But like stuff like that, like I can kind of remember just there was a bunch of figures that we had, but I don't remember actually seeing them. How did you get them? Right, right. Like Captain Power. Like, I'd see like oh, yeah, yeah, we had a few of those. Yeah, and there would be like certain stores you'd go to, you'd run into them, like like Eckerd's. You'd go to Eckerd's, you know, to make a win. Yeah you know, Woolworth, you gotta go to Woolworth, and you can get like G.I. Joe's for like almost maybe like three bucks, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, they were pretty cheap at Woolworth, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, back when ten dollar bills were were a big deal.
SPEAKER_05Funny, funny, yeah, for real. Uh, funny story about Woolworth. I so you remember the superpowers line? Yes, no. Well, I I had quite I had a few of them, and I I always want to brainiac because I thought he looked so cool, yeah.
SPEAKER_11And so with the metallic paint, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_05It was it was that metallic, you know, finish on him. And so I remember actually going to Woolworth, and my I was just holding it because I thought it was so cool. My dad was like, Yeah, you can hold it while we walk around and while I get what I need to get. And so we left, like, we actually left the store, and I was still holding it, and we were getting in the car, and my dad saw it and he was like, What? And so so we like went back in. He's like, I'm sorry, my son had it. And I didn't realize that, like, I didn't realize I was holding it, I was just holding it because I thought it was cool, you know, and and I wasn't paying attention. And so I almost shoplifted when it was like when I was like five or six.
SPEAKER_11Shoplifter. Wait, Jerry, so dad didn't buy you the brainiac.
SPEAKER_05You just had no no no we weren't there for that, you know. It's uh teacher's salary, you know, you know how it goes.
SPEAKER_11So uh that story is way more heartbreaking than what happened. I run in uh I'm super sad now.
SPEAKER_05No, you you know how it goes. It's uh I hear you, man. I hear you. Payday, you you get you get something if you're if you do well on your grades, and and it's payday, you know, or something like that. So you gotta pick one.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, that that's how my dad was. He'd be like, pick three, you can you can take two, but usually it'd be one. And he was always happy when I went with Joe's because the G.I. Joe's were the cheapest, and transformers were the high end, right? Transformers were expensive, yeah. They were the figures were the the parts were like metal on some of them, right? So they were so if I got one or two transformers, that was like a big, big deal. I had and then me, you know, he was pretty slick about being like, Well, you can get three or four of these Joes. So I was like, Oh okay, you got me convinced, you know what I mean? So yeah, that's a that's a tough one, man. I I I hear you though, I definitely know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. So I so I missed out on Brainiac. I never did get Brainiac, um, but it's okay. I I had I had like the main ones that I wanted, you know, Batman, Superman, the Flash, Joker, Penguin, you know. So so I had all the ones I really wanted.
SPEAKER_11Then you got Rick wandering into the Hall of Justice, right? Rick was in there with all the Joes.
SPEAKER_05Uh he I had Keith and Pidge from the Voltron figures. So you know, they they'd kind of play all together, you know, it was like a super team.
SPEAKER_11That's right. That's right. I always thought, is that the guy Pidge is the guy that was like the chubby one, right?
SPEAKER_05No, Pidge was the little the little one with the glasses.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, who was the chubby one? He was in the orange. Oh, yeah, that's right. Yeah, I remember I liked him because I was like, Oh, he's got a different body type than the rest. Like, yeah, he's a chubby guy, you know. I can I can relate now as an adult to that, but good stuff, man.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. So that's that's the episode, you know. And it I mean, I loved it, I thought it was great, and I can't wait to watch more.
SPEAKER_11Um, awesome, awesome. Yeah, same here. Double A made a fan out of me, so I think that's a good one. You you uh you curveballed Jerry, I think, with uh have you covered this? And I was like, Ah, Jerry's gonna say yes, and you were like, No. I was like, Whoa, all right, so yeah, I was surprised.
SPEAKER_05I was like, Oh, okay because I you know, I never watched it before, so I I didn't realize one that there was even an episode of Christmas episode, but but two, that there was even a show, you know. I I should have remembered it. And thinking back, it's like, oh yeah, that's when I thought Keith was whatever. But but if I had really thought about it, I'd probably would have remembered. And I just thought, uh, you know, okay, whatever Robotech, it was the toys I thought they were cool, and so I mean, and now it's like this is this is a really cool show, and I can't wait to like dive into it, man. At least the first, you know, the first saga. The first saga, for sure.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I feel the same way. Double A's got it right here in front of us on DVD. I have to bar borrow that.
SPEAKER_03Oh, sweet.
SPEAKER_11But but I love the curve on this on this episode because it's like I think double A was hoping to be like, Oh, I want to hear Jerry's Robotech episode. He's like, I don't have one, I'll put you guys on one, and now we're like, dang, now we're under the gun. Oh, okay. I was like, double A was like, I'm sorry, CM. I didn't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, seriously. I was like, Oh, I bet Jerry has an episode. I want to hear what he has to say about this one.
SPEAKER_11Meanwhile, Jerry's like, great idea, guys. Uh, when do you guys want to be on? I was like, I need to watch the show first, hold on. Hey man, but that's cool, man, because that's someone out there, Jerry, that loves your show and loves all the 80s stuff you do is gonna be like, wonder if you did Robotech and now you've got that.
SPEAKER_04And now now we can say it. Yeah, we can say put that in your utility belt. We can check that uh giant robot you know box uh one more there, right?
SPEAKER_11Did Voltron ever did Voltron touch on Christmas?
SPEAKER_05No, no, they didn't. Uh but I got one for Christmas, so that I'm gonna count it.
SPEAKER_11There you go. That works, that works. And we we did determine with when our previous episode that Thundercats didn't do an episode per se, but the comic book you didn't know.
SPEAKER_05But comic books had had a Christmas-ish yeah thing. So uh which you got you got that question right on the uh the little trivia game that we had uh at the Christmas party.
SPEAKER_11Hey, see, not everybody did their homework because me listening to episodes of Totally Rad Christmas helped me out big time. And uh I was and the uh Jerry hosted you know the virtual Christmas party double A and uh he did a cool game where we all got to kind of play online uh trivia, and I was like, Oh dang, I know this from the from Jerry's episodes. I was like, I haven't been listening the rest of you podcasts. That's why they don't have time to listen. I was shocked when every when somebody said they were like, Oh, during this time I don't listen to any Christmas podcasts.
SPEAKER_05I I really don't either, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I I super turned everything on that I hadn't been listening to, you know, like in October, I want to be in Halloween mode, and then in November I start to to seep into it a little bit, but uh definitely like I said, January 1, you know, I really crank it up because I want to get the yeah, in December. Yeah, in fact, um one of the podcasts that Jerry contributes on quite a bit, tis the podcast, one of the hosts uh wrote a book, and so yeah, they're reading his book as part of part of the show, an additional episode. So I started January 1st, I mean uh December 1st, excuse me. I started his uh first chapter, the the prologue, and like now I'm up to like chapter 35 or something like that. I never listened to books on tape either, so for me, it's been a good, a good ride uh with that, and it's getting me in the feels because I was like, All right, I I get it, like it's cool, you know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's done, and I had to read like a really hard chapter, and yeah, it was it was like emotionally there. I was like, Oh, this is so like I gotta keep going, just keep going. Don't think about what you're reading, just keep going.
SPEAKER_11It was, man, that was a good one. And you were Jerry was like one of the first or third readers, yeah. That's another thing. He's getting all the Christmas podcasters to read, he doesn't read them all. It's it's all the yeah. So Jerry read like uh like episode three or four, like or chapter four, yeah, early on. Yeah, and another gal that reads later on, he um Anthony played her outtakes, and she says it, she's like, Man, I had to stop because uh she goes, I got choked up, and I got choked up in that part too. I was like, Oh, she got choked up too reading it. I can only imagine. So it's funny. You guys did a great job, everyone's doing a great job, it's really fun.
SPEAKER_05Oh, thanks. We we do what we can, but you know, it does make me wonder what would you guys say is your hap, hap, happiest like memory or moment of of Robotech.
SPEAKER_02But you go first, it's funny because like when my brother did get it, it was during December, so we saw it like during that whole week. We we would watch like five episodes. It was us three and in the room, and we'd watch five episodes a day until we finished it. Like we started on Monday, we finished it on Friday. So it's cool, it's a cool moment, it's in December, you know. So I think that's why I I tagged Jerry. Hey, can you guys do Robotech? Yeah, you know, for me it means like Christmas time, okay. Even though Robotech doesn't take place and all that, but it's like you know, for me, it's me and my brothers hanging out and spending like at least two two and a half hours of just watching it, like all of us just being quiet, like like if we're all like seven years old again, just being like, Oh so y'all were binging because you're on DVD, yeah.
SPEAKER_11You're binging before binging was a thing, you know, there you go before streaming. Yeah, and I think this episode's titled Seasons Greetings, right? Seasons Greetings, yep.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Well, I could be I could be uh I could be lame here and say that my hap hap happiest moment is uh doing this episode with you two guys right here. But when I knew that this question was gonna come up, I thought about it. I'm I can relate it directly to the episode, but just that in part, we said, you know, when silent night comes on, you already got me. That's gonna that's gonna win me over right there. So I have them have the carolers kind of singing silent night in that moment after this obviously horrible tragedy. And again, they get that triumph of the human spirit moment that kind of only Christmas can bring. And so they start singing silent night. I was like, Man, that's that's awesome! What a great again. I was like, dang, this is well written. I was like, Yeah, I was like, I'm done. That that's good, you know, that's good stuff. So that'd be it for me.
SPEAKER_05That's good for me. It was I uh not really that memory, but just playing with the toy, you know, and just just having the little figure, it was so cool. And uh Zor Prime was usually the the bad guy as well. He'd kind of be out with the cobras, you know. I mean, it's just uh I just remember playing with them and really enjoying it because they just were awesome. And I remember being devastated when I lost Rick's helmet. Because he looks so cool with the helmet on, yeah.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, the death of an accessory is a sad death.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's cool, man.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, any any guy that was that G.I. Joe size ended up in my rancor's mouth at some point. So great pull. Nice. He got he'd have one guy on each hand and then he'd be eating one. So that's awesome. If you weren't Luke or like you know, snake eyes, it was like you you probably got eaten by the rancor at one point.
SPEAKER_05So oh man, but now we come to my favorite part of the show, which is a little bit I like to call gag me with the spoon. So, this is where we do our best impression of our least favorite part of the episode. So, as a guest, I'll let you go first, just kind of set up the scene a little for us.
SPEAKER_11You want me to go first, don't worry? Okay, uh, I wrote down a couple because I was like, I don't know who who's gonna get what first, but since I'm gonna go first, I'm gonna take it first. So, in the beginning of the episode, you know, Chiron is planning his attack and he's ready to like, you know, he's he's determined to get this proto protoculture. So after he tells all his men, you know what I mean? Like, everybody get ready to deploy, we're gonna go, we're gonna do this, and we're gonna get that protoculture one one way or another. Um, he crushes his own like phone to that he's using to like relay his message so that he can start to go on his villainous tirade where he says, They will know Chiron the destroyer was able to crush them with their own protoculture.
SPEAKER_10Oh, we'll bow to Chiron.
SPEAKER_05That's a good villain laugh.
SPEAKER_10I was like, That was good Chiron.
SPEAKER_11So yeah, thank you. I appreciate that, Jerry. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I thought that line was like, oh, he went full supervillain in that moment. Like, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03No one's around.
SPEAKER_10Let me just monologue real quick, you know.
SPEAKER_11That's awesome. You got another? Double. I'll let you, I'll let you do. Let me see what I got here. Yeah, I wrote down a couple. Yeah, let me see. So am I doing yours? Double? Am I gonna do it looks like we'll do uh this is what I sometimes say when I've I'm tired. You don't need a lot of setup for this line, but this is from Minme. But sometimes when I've been at karaoke too long with friends, I just say this I don't want to sing anymore, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_02That was mine, actually. That was yours. That whole part, like this, you know, I was like, Oh, come on.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, I also have I also have this one, uh, which is great for the 80s, right? Yeah, let's go to the mall. There you go. That's kind of one vendor says that to the other guys, they're like, the two guys are going back and forth, and he's just like, Yeah, let's go to the mall.
SPEAKER_05Which mine follows up on that because that that was my least favorite part, is is those those guys, and he says, Yeah, the mall couldn't be any worse than this.
unknownThat's right.
SPEAKER_04Oh man, that's great stuff.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, that that that scene is kind of thrown in, you know what I mean? So you're like you do it, you could getting into the rest of the episode, but I'm sure it plays into another part, like you were saying, double A. Good stuff, good stuff.
SPEAKER_02Um double A, you want to you want to hear? Yeah, it was it was that home inmate part where she's like, I don't want to sing anymore. I'm tired, I'm you know, I don't want to do this for anyone. And Rick, like Rick finally tells her, like, uh, you know, you have talent, you need to go out there. Like, there's a whole war going on here, you know. She's complaining about going out and singing her singing career, you know, like come on. What a dynamic, right?
SPEAKER_11This guy puts his life on the line, you know, flying these necrobots.
SPEAKER_02He's like, Okay, like, you know, yeah, that I'm I'm tired of being hounded and singing.
SPEAKER_11The life of a pop star, he's like, Yeah, whatever, man. Just uh, you know, make up your mind. I got I got bigger stuff on my mind.
SPEAKER_05Oh man, but you know, I gotta ask, you know, G.I. Joe taught us that knowing is half the battle. What do you think the other half is?
SPEAKER_11Uh for me, and I didn't know this, and this is what I was gonna tell you guys earlier. So when I see so when I see Chiron going to get the protoculture, I noticed that like he like has to like he struggles and picks up that big old tank or whatever it is, I guess, that the protoculture is in. Right. And I'm like, why didn't he get any help or why didn't he bring like a dolly or anything? Like, I was like, he would he just like, but I didn't realize they were bigger than everybody else. So my thought process was like, I thought he was like a regular guy, and I'm like, wow, your whole plan was just to break in and then like just put it on your back. I was like, that'd be like if I wanted to go steal a refrigerator and I decided we're just gonna carry it like that. So my my what I wrote down was if knowing is half the battle, the other half is if you need to steal your weapon's power source, bring a dolly or at least a team with somebody, you know.
SPEAKER_05It's yep, yep, good advice for uh any thieves uh out there.
SPEAKER_11Give me a little help over here. You know, I think Energron was a lot smaller, Megatron was able to handle carrying it on his own, but it looked like Chiron was kind of struggling with it. I'm like, dude, are you just putting that on your back? Like he does, he does hook it up to his his bot. So later on, he does do that. So it just seemed like you know, not very smart, I guess. If my car needs a new engine, I don't go put the engine on my back and then walk it back to the car to put it in.
SPEAKER_02Oh man, what about what about you, double A? For me, it's don't date two women at one time. Oh that whole love triangle. That's a great piece bit of advice. Yeah, that's that's good everyday everyday lesson. Yeah, don't be like Rick. Yeah, he's all kissing her at the end.
SPEAKER_05And mine kind of piggybacks off that. So if knowing is half the battle, the other half is calling your crush first before just showing up at their place so you can avoid getting your heart broken. Yeah.
SPEAKER_11And what what is uh what does Rick tell her uh when mid-may first gets there? Oh, my friends don't have to call, you know, just come on. Yeah, but then she's crying and he's still got her out in the snow. I'm like, invite her in, you jerk.
SPEAKER_05Like well, it's it's his ex. You don't you don't want to invite him right in. See what happens? They they just they move it in, sorry, and now you know.
SPEAKER_11Yep, he knew he was like, If I invite you, you know, now I know, and that's half that's one there's half the best.
SPEAKER_05Oh man, guys, this has been a blast talking with you. But you know, tell me about just another Friday night.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, double A start off. Yeah, I mean, we just talk about everything that we love in pop culture. I mean, it's everything, it's cartoons, it's TV shows, it's you know, like I told CM one of the ideas I have running is to do an episode about the three stooges because I love the three stooges. Nice, you know. So so yeah, I mean it's just everything. We talk, yeah, we talk about everything wrestling, we talk about books, we talk about comic books, you know. So it's just everything that we're interested in, music, and we try to get people involved in our show. So we go live on Fridays and we try to, you know, if anybody comes on, you know, that's how we met Joe, you know, one of our fans, you know, who became a friend of ours, you know, he just popped in one day and just started commenting, yeah. You know, so we like to get people involved. We want to make it feel like like we're just having around you know, hanging out and uh you know, around the table drinking, and just you know, because we got fans, it seems like around our own age. So it's like everyone seems to know what we talk about. So right, yeah, more products of the uh of the 80s, like ourselves, it seems like it's who we attract on our show, which is great to us because it's uh yeah, because like I said, I've been able to meet newer people, you know, without actually meeting their names, right? Have the have similarities, you know, with these people, and we chit chat like like we've known them for like 10 years.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_11It's it's an amazing thing when you find people that you have so much common ground with. Uh, you know, we mentioned Joe, but it's through Joe that we met you, Jerry. You know what I mean? So the to the podcast group, and then he had me to tell me to check out your show. And I heard the first episode of your show I heard was the one you had him on. Oh yeah, and then from that I went through your episodes and I piecemealed the ones I really wanted to hear, which ended up being uh some you know uh X-Men probably X-Men, you know, Manny on Gremlins. Um you know, it's just so many great ones. Then then listening to their episodes that you you come out on. So I've heard a lot of new podcasts because you're a guest on there, and I'm like, I know Jerry's gonna bring the heat on this episode, so let me go listen to that episode. And it's great, you know, from you talking about you know, you know, Rambo to Rocky to so many other things, it it's always uh a fun time. Lost boys, that's like all of me and double A stuff.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, so it's been like stuff like that that from our podcast that we've been able to kind of branch out more and more. So, but yeah, we just talk everything pop culture, everything there is, yeah. And uh, we just you know, we like to give our opinions, yeah.
SPEAKER_11If people love you, Jerry, we got we just had you on last week on our Masters of the Universe Revelations part.
SPEAKER_05That was awesome.
SPEAKER_11I would say though our show is rated R. Yeah, definitely nice, can be hard rated R. I think Jerry's fans listen to him probably with their kids in the room. Don't listen to our show with your kids in the room.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, drop them off and then turn to and then listen. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_11Or if you're you know, after they're in bed and you go in the garage and and you got a couple of six pack, you know what I mean? It's it's it's probably a good listen for you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because after a few beers, the some of the language starts coming in.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, it definitely gets pretty, yeah, it gets pretty pretty rated R pretty quick.
SPEAKER_02Um, but yeah, we do that. I mean, pretty much so. I mean, we we really don't try to bash anything, that's not our thing. You know, if we don't like it, we're just not gonna talk about it period, you know. So we just want to kind of highlight the stuff we like and why we like it. You know, we're not out there just to knock anything, yeah.
SPEAKER_11You know, we're not gonna cover the weeden cut of Justice League just to be just to crap on it, you know. Yeah, you know what I mean. So uh and for the most part, we can kind of find the the beauty in almost anything. So and and you know, sometimes we disagree, but uh for the most part, we're we're we're in in unison, you know. We did an episode a couple weeks back on Smallville that got a lot of good responses on Instagram, which I was never I'd never seen the show, but I I binged a bunch of episodes that double A gave me, and I was like, Man, this is I felt like how you felt about Robots like Jerry, it's a great show, so yeah, yeah. Like I said, we go live on Friday. That's kind of an aspect of ours that I hear other people don't do. You guys do editing, which is sounds amazing. Uh, I wish I knew how to do that. You saved our bacon, Jerry. So huge thank you for saving our bacon. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, podcasting platforms. Yeah, our audio was wonky except for the YouTube and the uh Facebook Live uh feed. But uh through your Christmas miracle that you are Jerry, you saved us and you got us good audio, and we put that up. And lucky was lucky, uh the dork dad from the uh watch this podcast was the first one to tell me, hey man, your audio is it's no good on Spotify, you can't hear Jerry. I was like, Oh no, so I'm like panicking, and then you just come out of left field, and I was like, Jerry, are you a Christmas angel?
SPEAKER_05No, no, but I I just happen to know a little bit, like the teeniest tiniest bit about downloading from YouTube.
SPEAKER_11Well, it worked like a charm, man, and it sounds great now. And thank you for that, Jerry. Again, so huge thank you for saving. Yeah, no worries. It was uh our butts on our episode with you. Yeah, but yeah, anyone that wants to come and ever join us on a Friday night. Like I said, typically we go live on a Friday night. This week we're gonna be going live on Thursday night because almost all this month, right? Yeah, all this month. We know the holidays they move it up because our our uh my girlfriend and double's wife were like yeah, our spouses will not let us make it New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, so we're we're always happy to move it up. I think last year we did December 23rd, yeah, which was great on a Wednesday. So this year we'll probably do that again, the 23rd for that. And this week we're going early. Next week we're going early because of Spider-Man and double A's uh uh daughter's birthday. Yeah, so if anyone wants to check us out this week, like I said, we'll be going live tomorrow on Facebook and then but usually it's Fridays around 7 30. Yeah, usually it's Fridays around 7 30. We go live and we invite anyone to come and join the conversation. Some of your Christmas podcasting buddies and our buddies popped in to say hi to you, Jerry. Oh, yeah, CJ, CJ, CJ and Anthony there. I appreciate them coming out to show support. I said, Come and support Jerry, even if you don't support us, come and support Jerry.
SPEAKER_05But stick around because it's always fun listening to you guys. Yeah, yeah, stick around.
SPEAKER_02We we drink some drinks, we have some laughs. So it's pretty it's pretty good. And sometimes when we go off air, sometimes or like when it cuts off our anchor, that's when we'll you know comment with all the the guests, and it's kind of like that can go on for like 30 minutes.
SPEAKER_11Oh yeah, depending on the topic, man. We go, you know, we do like a break every 30 minutes to kind of the audio has to load on our audio platform. So while that audio is loading, we read the comments from the live, and people have a myriad of opinions on whatever we're talking about, or they want to go off on their own tangents about you know whatever they're watching, reading at the time. So we end up talking about that a little bit too. But it's a lot of fun, man. We've been doing it for over a year now. Yeah, almost two. We're not quite at a hundred episodes because we only do one a week, unlike you, Jerry. The the the Iron Man of podcasting, the comment in a podcast.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I told you I it it kind of started as an accident, really.
SPEAKER_11I've heard, I've heard, I love that story. I love that story.
SPEAKER_05You know, it is what it is, but uh now at this point it's like, well, I kind of got to keep it up. So so yeah, starting in usually it's October, sometimes September, but uh it I that's when I start releasing more and more. But uh, but where can they find you?
SPEAKER_11We just this is cool, we just got this established probably in the last week or so. But you go to www.justanotherfridaynight.com, spelled out just like it's spelled J-U-S-T-A-N-O-T-H-E-R, uh F R I D A Y N I G H. But it is just like that, it's not night, like a different kind of night or anything else. So wjust another friday night.com. It'll take you right to our link tree, and from our link tree you can get to our anchor where there's episodes. We're on all the podcasting platforms, Spotify, Amazon, breaker, podcast address. Yeah, anywhere, any of those you can go on and get us. But we're also on YouTube, you can get our YouTube link there. Uh, we are at J A F N Podcast on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. You can get us there too. We don't tick tock a lot, usually because I forget. But when I do remember to do something, uh it's pretty cool. I don't know if you saw, I don't know if you might have seen it, Jerry. I think we went up to our Instagram, but I did this. I thought it was a funny one about when you're trying to collect something and you want a collectible really bad. And I cut the scene in from Batman v Superman where it's Jeremy Irons as Alfred talking about, you know, you start to get the fever, the rage, it turns good men cruel. I said, That's how I feel sometimes when I'm looking for something from my nephew that he wants that like came out, you know, years before he was born. And I'm like, where did you find this? I'm like, so then I'm talking to toy vendors and I'm like, Do you have this old venom? And they're like, Oh, yeah, that's$80. I'm like, What? I'm like, Y'all are ruining Christmas. Like, all right, all right, let's bargain. And I'm just like, man. So, but yeah, I'll send you the link if you haven't seen it. But um, yeah, go find us there, just another friend.com. The link tree is there, and all the good stuff is there. A link to our YouTube, we'd love to have you subscribe. It's one video a week. We don't bombard you with anything, and like I said, our TikTok would be it should be more bombarding, but we're not as I'm not as active on it as I don't even do TikTok, so yeah. I know I'm not even as happy as you guys. I was gonna say, I know art from Cozy Christmas does it, and gotten really good at it. Yeah, I was like, oh, he's got really advanced really quick. But yeah, you know, in moderation, in moderation, we do it. But otherwise, like I said, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, we have a group called the Friday Night Faithful. So we call our listeners, also we call them the Friday nighters. So become one of them. And if you've ever listened to one episode or hung out in the group, you're automatically in. You're part of the Friday Night Faithful, and you're a Friday nighter yourself.
SPEAKER_02And in the Friday Night Faithful group, we kind of encourage people to drop anything of pop culture, you know. If you want to advertise one of your podcasts, or like, go ahead. Absolutely, Gary. I we're always welcome.
SPEAKER_04I know what you're talking about, guys.
SPEAKER_02No, but we we have it here, I'm like, yeah, drop it in. Yeah, I tell Joe the same thing. I'm like, drop in your now, watch this, you know. The uh you know, so and anything news related, if there's anything like a big casting, like drop it in our group.
SPEAKER_11Absolutely, yeah. Our show runs really long because we just don't stop talking. Uh so you get us for those couple of hours a week, but then it's like, hey, we encourage everyone to go obviously check out your show, Jerry, uh especially the episodes that we're on. But yeah, a lot of fun, man. But but obviously, you know, all the other guys too, you know, I mean, are the Christmas podcasters, but even the people, you know, people like we said, like Joe and anyone else that's got a show or anything to promote, come in there and and you know, hang out. You know, we're like the local bar where you come and say, Can I put my flyer up for my band? Or like, go ahead. Go ahead. Stay for a drink. Go buy the first round.
SPEAKER_05That's awesome, guys. It's yes, definitely go check them out Friday nights usually, although this month is a little you know wonky, so it'll be Thursdays or Wednesday on the 23rd.
SPEAKER_11We'll post up about it. Whenever the 23rd falls, I don't know.
SPEAKER_05But either way, go check them out. It's always fun and they can cover some cool stuff, you know, stuff that we grew up with, so definitely go check it out. But on that note, I'm gonna end it by saying as the smoldering fires begin to die down, people throughout the city are no longer thinking about Christmas, but are grateful just to be alive and to check us out on our social media pages, Facebook and Instagram at Totally Rad Christmas and Twitter at RadChristmas. And if you're feeling like the people of Met Cross City singing Silent Night on Christmas, leave us a review on iTunes. Not only does it help us reach more people, but you also get a free sticker.
